THE MINT HILL TIMES: DAWSON MODERN DENTISTRY BRINGS A RELAXED ATMOSPHERE, TOP-TIER PATIENT CARE.

Posted by Dawson Modern Dentistry May 18,2022

MINT HILL, NC – If you’re like most people, visiting the dentist probably doesn’t make your list of “Oooh, can’t wait!” activities. In fact, it’s not uncommon for people of all ages to feel some hesitation as they head in for dental work. Dr. Ashley Dawson aims to shift that perception with her new dental practice. Dawson Modern Dentistry opened in July of this year in the Hoods Crossroads Shopping Center on Matthews-Mint Hill Road. The office is focused on creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere where patients can receive excellent care.

To make each appointment more peaceful, patients at Dawson Modern Dentistry can kick back and watch their favorite Netflix shows on noise-canceling headphones during their appointments, which provides the perfect distraction if you’re less-than-enthused about the polishing sounds going on around you. Cuddle up with the cozy blankets and pillows they also provide, and you might just think you’re at home on your couch.

Owning her own dental practice is a venture many years in the making for Dawson, who says she’s wanted to be a dentist since she shadowed a family friend during her freshman year of high school and instantly felt pulled to the profession.

“I love that I’m able to connect with my patients. You see them grow up in the practice. I love that I’m able to change someone’s confidence about their smile when they’re in my office. It’s so gratifying,” she says.

Beyond fostering an inviting environment, Dr. Dawson is also building her office with a philanthropic component in mind. For every new patient her practice receives, Dawson’s office donates $10 to Foundation For Girls, which aims to empower marginalized women and girls through knowledge and critical resources. The money goes to help offset the cost of the care packages the organization provides.

Dawson’s childhood experiences make the cause one that’s “near and dear” to her heart. Dawson and her mom endured significant financial struggles during her childhood in Duluth, Georgia. Though Dawson’s mom worked tirelessly, she still struggled to make ends meet, and the pair ultimately faced eviction several times. Now, Dawson is committed to offering a helping hand to others who may be experiencing similar challenges.

She knows firsthand how important these small acts of support can be to someone facing a tough time. Growing up, Dawson received a discounted gym membership, which allowed her to pursue her passion for competitive cheerleading without worrying about the costs associated with the sport. Dawson went on to become a highly decorated athlete, winning Team World Championships in 2007 with her All-Star competitive cheer team. She was a collegiate athlete, too, and won a National Championship in Acrobatics and Tumbling during her senior year at the University of Oregon.

Beyond mastering the physicality of these pursuits, Dawson says the life lessons she learned during her time as an athlete left a significant impression on her, too. In fact, she says she still relies on these lessons as she builds her dental practice. This includes how to ready yourself for a challenge that lies ahead.

“You don’t want to have any regrets about how you’ve prepared. You want to know that you’ve done your homework and you’re ready. Then, at the end of the day, all you can do is your best,” she says.

Speaking of homework, though Dawson graduated from Howard University’s College of Dentistry in 2016, she’s still committed to learning new techniques to benefit her patients. She’s currently pursuing a Fellowship with the Academy of General Dentistry, an intensive continuing education experience that only six percent of dentists in the U.S. and Canada achieve.

“I hope it shows my commitment to education and making sure that I’m bettering myself for my patients,” she says as she reflects on her decision to participate in the program.

WHAT ARE INVISALIGN ATTACHMENTS?
WHAT ARE INVISALIGN ATTACHMENTS?

It used to be that Invisalign treatment was only available for patients with minor occlusal issues. However, with advancements in SmartForce Invisalign Attachment technology, Dr. Ashley Dawson can now treat patients with more complex malocclusions at our Mint Hill office, without the need for traditional metal or ceramic braces.  In these more advanced cases, tiny, tooth-colored structures are attached to your teeth and act as anchor points for aligners, helping to gradually move your teeth into the desired position. Attachments are made out of a composite resin, just like teeth fillings, and are strategically placed to achieve different results.  How Do Invisalign Attachments Work? It may be helpful to understand how Invisalign works first, before breaking down how attachments aid in the alignment process.  Invisalign utilizes a series of removable, clear plastic aligners that are each shaped slightly differently than your existing smile. They subtly move your teeth over the course of treatment, resulting in a beautiful, straight bite. Sometimes, however, your teeth need to be pushed or pulled in a certain way that just isn’t possible with the aligners alone, and that’s where attachments come in. The durable composite resin attachments are tiny shapes that are affixed to specific teeth at strategic angles that give the aligners an anchor to grip onto, providing the leverage necessary to move teeth into their desired position. In some cases, “buttons” can be placed, and rubber bands will be utilized to coax stubborn teeth into alignment.  For many patients in the past, tricky misalignments or other complex cases would automatically rule out Invisalign entirely, and end up requiring the use of traditional metal orthodontics. At Dawson Modern Dentistry, however, we’re experts at utilizing Invisalign to its fullest potential, so you can straighten your smile, and find new levels of self-confidence.  Will I Need Invisalign Attachments? Dr. Dawson has years of experience in bringing dream smiles to life with Invisalign, with and without attachments. Something she’s learned over the years is that every grin is unique and creating a beautiful, functional bite is not a one-size-fits-all process. When you visit our Matthews, NC office, Dr. Dawson will perform a comprehensive exam to find out if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign, and if your treatment will require the use of attachments.  DON’T WAIT TO START SMILING - CONTACT OUR MINT HILL DENTAL OFFICE If you’re unsatisfied with the alignment of your smile, but don’t want to deal with the uncomfortable nature of traditional metal braces, Invisalign may be right for you. With advancements in Invisalign technology, attachments make Invisalign more accessible than ever. How Effective Is Invisalign?
How Effective Is Invisalign?

Invisalign promises to help you get straighter teeth within 18 months while keeping your smile intact. This orthodontic treatment has only been around for two decades and has gained massive popularity in recent years.  According to the manufacturing company [https://www.researchgate.net/publication/263131814_Treatment_outcome_and_efficacy_of_an_aligner_technique_-_regarding_incisor_torque_premolar_derotation_and_molar_distalization], Invisalign “can effectively perform major tooth movements, such as bicuspid derotation up to 50° and root movements of upper central incisors up to 4 mm”.  We have worked with hundreds of patients with orthodontic issues and have helped solve their problems with Invisalign. If it sounds too good to be true, let’s take a closer look at the Invisalign treatment to help you understand how effective it is.  WHAT RESEARCHERS SAY Based on a study published in the Australian Dental Journal [https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/adj.12480], Invisalign is the most efficient clear aligner on the market. Researchers noted that the efficiency of the product’s versions released after 2010 has improved, now applying more force on the wearer’s teeth. In another study published on PubMed Central [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6160377/], researchers noted that Invisalign works well for non-extraction treatment of mild to moderate malocclusions of non-growing patients. In other words, Invisalign helps solve bite and misalignment issues in late teens and adults. Other conclusions of the study include: * Invisalign can solve most moderately complex issues in a shorter time than alternatives but can take longer when treating complex issues. * Invisalign can straighten dental arches by leveling and de-rotating the teeth.  * The use of additional Invisalign attachments is effective for different types of movements like overbite control, expansion of maxillary posterior teeth, and canine and premolar rotational movements. * The bottom line is that Invisalign works well to solve most bite and alignment issues in teens and adults by shortening the treatment period. Its efficacy as regards more complex issues is still under debate. Schedule an appointment with us today.

Your One-Stop Guide to Dental Veneers
Your One-Stop Guide to Dental Veneers

Veneers are among the leading cosmetic dental procedures that can fix minor dental issues and give you a fuller smile. Data suggests that millions of Americans are choosing veneers to make themselves look and feel better. In fact, according to one study, the veneer market in the US is estimated to be worth over $581 million in 2021.  We offer a host of general and cosmetic dental procedures for patients of all ages and know perfectly well how veneers can help improve your image.  In this blog, we’ve put together a list of the most important things you should know about veneers: VENEERS: WHAT ARE THEY? Veneers are thin, custom-made shells that are applied to the front surface of your teeth to improve their appearance. Veneers can hide chipped, stained, and uneven teeth, and improve their structure.  There are two types of veneers available: * Porcelain Veneers Porcelain is a tooth-colored material that dentists use in multiple procedures, including veneers, as it is very strong and durable. To apply porcelain veneers, our dentist will file off part of your tooth enamel and apply the veneers using a bonding agent.  Veneers made of porcelain can last for decades, provided they are well maintained. * Composite Resin Veneers Composite resin veneers work just like porcelain veneers. The difference is that composite resin is not as durable as porcelain and, therefore, it is cheaper. When applying composite resin veneers, our dentist will also file off less tooth enamel.  HOW TO CARE FOR DENTAL VENEERS? Dental veneers are strong and last long provided you maintain them by following a few simple rules and implementing a good oral care routine. To retain all the benefits veneers offer, you should:  * Limit the intake of staining foods and drinks like coffee, tea, sauces, curries, and berries. That’s because these foods can gradually discolor your teeth and cause the sheen to wear off, and they can affect veneers the same way.  * Refrain from biting too hard on hard foods or materials, grinding your teeth, opening containers with your teeth, and biting your nails. Veneers are a cosmetic dental procedure that can dramatically improve your appearance and offer you renewed confidence in social situations. For more information on veneers, get in touch with us.

Here is a breakdown of these options: * 50% for crowns, dentures, and other major procedures * 80% for procedures like fillings * 100% for preventative care like X-rays, exams, and cleanings Before choosing an insurance plan, you should first consider how much coverage you and your family need. So, research the various plans across providers and match them with your requirements to make the best choice. * Talk to Your Dentist: If you choose a PPO plan your dentist is part of, this can help you save money and benefit from instant coverage. * Pre-existing Illness: Some plans either have a waiting period or charge extra to cover pre-existing oral concerns.
